Entrance to Auschwitz |
During so many years, I have dreamt of going to Krakow to visit Auschwitz, especially after studying history and reading numerous books on the topic. Finally, my mum and I booked a trip and left for a weekend during autumn. With mixed feelings, we managed to visit most of the typical tourist attractions, among them: Auschwitz, Birkenau, Podgorze Ghetto, Schindler's Factory and Empty Chairs Memorial. There are no words to describe how it felt to walk around the empty and ghostly grounds of Auschwitz, which was once crowded with prisoners and the daily miseries they had to go through. The pain and suffering was in the air and it certainly felt strange being inside those buildings where so many horrible things took place, or on the grounds where ashes had been scattered. This will definitely be a memory for life and finally, I get some peace knowing I have witnessed one of the world's worst murder sites.
